Craig Sorrells is quickly becoming one of the most recognized funk/soul/jazz musicians in the southeast US. With his soulful vocals, and a trumpet sound that screams New Orleans, Craig is packing clubs all over the region. Craig is from Spartanburg, SC and started playing trumpet at the age of 10. He was classically trained at a young age and attended The South Carolina Govenors School For The Arts. He obtained his first taste of world-wide honors in 1995 by winning a DCI World Championship while he was a lead trumpet(soprano) player for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. After what he calls “That magical summer!!” Craig attended The University of South Carolina, in Columbia, SC, to study Music Education on a full music scholarship. While at USC Craig began his jazz studies under Bert Ligon, and legendary tenor sax player Roger Pemberton. In 1995-1996 he worked as brass caption head for the Irmo High School Marching Band under direction of Bruce Dinkins where he helped lead them to several Best Brass Awards, two straight SC 4A State Marching Band Championships, and a top 12 finish in the Bands of America High School Marching Band Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1997 he enlisted with The United States Marine Corps Band where he studied jazz at the Joint Armed Forces School of Music in Little Creek, VA. After his service in the Marines, Craig completed his music studies at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC. In 2002 he earned a bachelors degree in Music Performance with emphasis in Jazz Studies.

Over the past decade Craig has toured the local, regional, and national circuits with many different bands including The Work, The Gypsy Souls, Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, The Professors of Soul, The Rickey Godfrey Band, Whitney Walters and The Sound, Chronic, Chocolate Thunder, Entropy, and Soulution. Craig has also performed on stage with some of the world’s most renowned bands, and artists such as George Clinton, Warren Haynes, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, George Porter Jr., Jimmy Herring, Victor Wooten, Karl Denson, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Wailers, The Derek Trucks Band, Lettuce, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, The Rebirth Brass Band, Toots and the Maytals, Ivan Neville, Ekoostic Hookah, Garaj Mahal, Jurassic 5, Jeff Sipe, Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge, Stanton Moore, Robert Walters, The Lee Boys, Robin Ford, Johnny Winter, Stax recording legend William Bell, Zach Deputy, The Everyone Orchestra, DJ Logic, and many more…….

The Craig Sorrells Project is a culmination of all of Craig’s vast perferforming experiences that combines jazz, funk, reggae, soul, and traditional New Orleans second-line into one big steaming pot of musical gumbo! When asked how the band was formed Craig replied, ” I remember hearing an interview with Miles Davis where he said he could only attribute his success to the musicians he surrounded himself with over the years, so I decided to get the absolute best players I know and make something happen.” And make “Something” happen he did. The Craig Sorrells Project is a ensemble of the most proficient, and talented musicians around, and if Miles Davis was right then Craig has put himself in a position to be very successful.

Old Mill Brewpub Relief Benefit

Andrew  |  November 4

Join us for a night of live music, food trucks and a new beer release with all proceeds going to our good friends at Old Mill Brewpub. Old Mill suffered major damages from the recent Midlands Flooding and they are currently trying rebuild their brewery and restaurant. We asked Head Brewer Matt Rodgers how we could help and he jumped at the opportunity to brew a Collaboration beer with us. Matt and Don came up with a recipe for a session-able Oatmeal Amber. The new beer is born called “1000 Year Beer” named from the thousand year flooding that occurred in our home state.

Live Music with Jeff Chandler and Charles Hedgepath starts at 6:30, Automatic Taco and DobbieQ will be serving up dinner. Matt and a guest bartender from Old Mill will be here helping us sling lots of good beer for a good cause.

We will also have a silent auction with lots of cool items so make sure to check that out, all proceeds go to Old Mill.

Make plans to come out and help us support our neighbors through some tough times. Cheers!

Sunday Skunkday on 11/15/15

Andrew  |  October 30

We all know that the rains brought on by Hurricane Joaquin devastated parts of South Carolina and, even though the Upstate did not suffer the level of damage as our friends in the Lowcountry and Midlands, we did suffer some losses of our own.

One loss that is near and dear to our hearts was the cancellation of the Saturday edition of the Albino Skunk Music Festival. When Mother Nature intervened in early October, the festival was assigned an unenviable task – sell no tickets for Saturday, its busiest day, but still pay the bands that traveled.

Glynn Zeigler has done so much for the Upstate music community over the years that we want to take this opportunity to help him recoup some of those losses. Sunday Skunkday will be a day of music featuring some of our favorite local Skunk Fest alumni. There will be food, beers, a silent auction/raffle and even a morning yoga class (starting at 11am). This is a celebration of all that Skunk Fest means to us as we donate proceeds from the event to help our friend out this fall so he can focus on planning a triumphant Skunk return in the spring!

We are requesting a minimum of $10 donations for entrance. 100% of this donation will go to Zeigler & the efforts of the Spring Skunk Fest!

Skunkday Sunday:
11:00 am – FREE Hour yoga class hosted by Kate Townsend. We just ask if you participate in the yoga class, you make a donation to our cause.

Music Lineup (subject to change, check back for additional details)
12:00: Darby Wilcox
1:00: Tonight’s Noise
2:00: The Westend String Band
3:00: The Bad Popes

Fresh growth on the bluegrass family tree comes from Asheville, NC’s Brushfire Stankgrass. The band has significant crossover appeal with bluegrass/newgrass and jam rock fans alike, showcasing their “modern mountain fusion” with a dynamic live show and a two award-winning albums.  Stankgrass blends the traditional with  a grassy fusion inflected by analog-electronics and a hard hitting rhythm section.

Despite the fact that the band is not a “strictly traditional” bluegrass band, Brushfire Stankgrass currently holds the #1 global ranking in the bluegrass category on reverbnation.com.  Their sophomore release Microclimates debuted at #2 in Relix Magazine’s jamband radio charts and was named as one of WNCW’s top 100 releases of 2013. The album charted in the top 25 for 6 months. The debut album One For the Salamanders was featured in Relix Magazine’s top radio airplay charts in 2011, climbing as high as #2 and staying in the top 5 for 3 months. The two founding members (Ben and Will Saylor, banjo and guitar) are brothers who have been playing music since the age of three. Together with a rhythm section comprised of Micah Thomas on drums and Daniel Iannucci on bass (both are seasoned and well known Asheville musicians), the group’s chemistry is obvious.

The past year’s live performance highlights for Brushfire Stankgrass included nearly 100 tour dates, and several notable festival appearances. Both of the band’s albums are currently available from all major online music stores, and there is a large catalog of live shows posted on archive.org and soundcloud.  Brushfire Stankgrass invites you to smell their sounds.’

‘Proudly hailing from the musically rich foothills of Cleveland County (Shelby, NC), Dirty Grass Soul has been entertaining audiences across the Carolinas and beyond since their formation in 2011. With a sound that draws much influence from traditional music of the North Carolina foothills, Dirty Grass Soul manages to bring a new, refreshed, and re-energized sound to their music that falls somewhere between country, bluegrass, and southern rock & roll reminiscent of acts like The Charlie Daniels Band and The Marshall Tucker Band. Rather than simply relying on heavy guitar leads, Dirty Grass Soul offers instrumentation that mixes in a heavy dose of fiddle, pedal steel guitar, and banjo . DGS is lead by founding members Kevin Dedmon (Fiddle, Vocals, Guitar) and Lance Watson (Bass, Mandolin). They are joined by Tyler Melton (Vocals, Lead Guitar),Dedmon’s brother Kris Dedmon (Banjo), Glenn Miller (Pedal Steel Guitar), Josh Allison (Vocals & Percussion), and Jared Miller (Vocals & Percussion).

After touring the Carolina’s behind a self-released demo album “Movin’ On”, as well as shows with the likes of many of the southeast’s premier bands under their belt, Dirty Grass Soul has eared a reputation as one of Western NC’s emerging Southern Rock/Alt. Country bands.

Whether it is the hint of bluegrass, outlaw country, or rock & roll you hear in each song, their sound is uniquely Dirty Grass Soul. From Dedmon’s catchy originals, to their own twist on covers ranging from a variety of artists and styles, Dirty Grass Soul is sure to offer a little something for everyone. Be sure to follow or “like” Dirty Grass Soul on Facebook, Twitter, and Reverbnation for updates about the happenings of the band.’
